WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boosts in certain statistics. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or has a high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrades upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities and can be visited anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every few weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item upgrader mod, however they'll always be cheaper than buying new gear. For example, upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that are used to improve the quality of weapons and tools, armor and accessories. Players can purchase them through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners in a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through a variety of means, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, several new features were added to the upgrade system. Another notable change is that crests only have one use, so it's important to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top gear you have available and keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning on making. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character that will be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are full of high-quality gear.
